This is my finished giant charcoal drawing of Felix the Cat with my eavesdropping quote across the front. This project took a long time and I was glad to see it turn out so well. I had never used charcoal or done a drawing like that before so I was quite satisfied.

Spring Garden Construction

For this assignment we were to draw a portion of our own selecting of the construction on Spring Garden Street. We had to use a ruler, a charcoal pencil, and an eraser. I found this quite difficult because the charcoal pencil was not easy to use or keep straight. This isn’t the finished picture but my camera died and I needed to post this today. haha. =)

Anonymous Library Collage

Our assignment for this project was to select two random library books that we would ordinarily never select. Then we had to make a black and white collage representing this book, keeping in mind the aspects and techniques of Dadaism. After we were nearly finished with our collages we were then told that we were to make an exact copy of this on another sheet using on a number 2 pencil and an eraser. This was quite difficult, but when I was finally finished (after many many many hours) I felt really accomplished and I was quite proud that I actually did it. =) This first collage and drawing was for the book Campaign Finance in America by David Adamany.

Some Bench… Somewhere…

Our assignment this time was to sit on a bench somewhere along Tate street and observe our surroundings. I went to Tate Street Coffee and had a cup of joe with my cousin. My observations, for the most part, were predictable, but there were some that surprised me. The observations about the people surprised me the most, mainly because there were not that many people there at all and those that were there were not interacting the way I expected them to.

Stolen Conversations and Cartoon Stills

The first part of our project was to go into the public and eavesdrop on strangers. The focus was on getting down as much word for word conversation as possible. We then shared different snippets from these stolen conversations in class. The next day, then , we were to select a snippet and coordinate it with a cartoon still from a black and white 1940′s cartoon. I chose Felix the Cat because he was cute and simple. We then had to enlarge the still onto our humongous pieces of paper with charcoal, but that is a different post. =)

Tate Street Drawings

We were to take our sketch books and graphite pencils and draw two different places on Tate street. This preceded our backsides of buildings project. We were to draw only the backside of Tate street. The place that wasn’t to be looked at. I drew part of a pipe behind Jimmy Johns and then some flowers behind another food shop. The focus was to be on accuracy not necessarily beauty.

STENCILS!!!!!

I posted pictures a while ago of the backsides of buildings in Greensboro. Well, after we printed out those pictures, we had to take our xacto knife and turn them into stencils. This was really hard. I had never used an xacto knife in that way and it was a lot more difficult than I expected. The first stencil I made was the church. I liked the windows, but I messed up when trying to cut out the sidewalk. The first three stencils are my favorites, especially the one with the bush and the light pole. I hope you enjoy them. =)

Negative Space

We had to take a piece of paper and trace ten rectangles using our student id’s. Then we had to go outside and draw ten pictures inside of the rectangles, focusing on negative space. The paper was to large for the scanner so I had to scan it one half at a time. I hope they are easy enough to see. ??

Jimi Hendrix’s Red House in Graphite

One day we had to draw the sounds of the guitar in Jimi Hendrix’s song Red House. We were not to look at the paper; just draw what we heard.

Shapes Catalogue in Graphite

The day after we turned in our shapes catalogue, we had to draw eight of them in our sketch book using our graphite pencils. We had to do them all in different shades. This was harder than I originally thought because I kept drawing them with the same intensity unconsciously.
